The new building leans forward, for example, to touch the old library making a significant yet respectful connection. This building is a clear representation of Asplund’s gradual shift from classicism to functionalism. The library is home to books and journals. Some of the books were once the property of Sweden’s most famous architects, such as Sven Markelius, Sigurd Lewerentz and Uno Åhrén. Read more This project is an entry for the 2006 international open design competition for an expansion to Asplund's early modern masterpiece, the Stockholm Public Library. Parallel bar buildings sited perpendicular to the street which Asplund envisioned in his masterplan (most of which was not built to his design) are here inverted from mass to void, reinterpreted as giant hollow structural elements.

The Stockholm Public Library is a brainchild of Swedish architect Gunna Asplund, who also helped design the Skogskyrkogården, an early 20th cemetery with UNESCO world heritage status.
